Summer Adventures and Financial Milestones: Could My Net Worth Be $430,000 Right Now?

I hope you all are having a nice summer! I just returned from a 10-day vacation at the beach in New Brunswick. Overall, it went well, but the accommodation didn't match what had been advertised, and the wireless wasn't working. This was quite annoying because I had planned to show some movies to my elderly parents when they needed a break from the beach. Unfortunately, the wireless wasn't functional, so their only options during their rest time were listening to the radio and reading. Personally, it didn't bother me much, but it was certainly frustrating for them. I've never had any issues renting accommodation in New Brunswick before, but this year was disappointing. Next year, I'll probably plan a vacation closer to home for them—7 days should be sufficient, and it'll cost a bit less.

When I arrived home, one of the first things I did was check on my investment portfolio. If I evaluated everything correctly, my net worth is now around $430,000. The last time I updated my portfolio was on May 10, 2024, when my net worth was $413,741.80. Achieving a $430k net worth is great—it's my highest ever, which makes me happy, though I would have liked it to be a bit higher. I'm aiming for a $450,000 net worth by my 44th birthday at the end of August. That's the challenge with investing—once success starts, it's never quite enough. I won't update my investment portfolio this evening, but here are my current numbers as of July 19, 2024:

- Non-registered portfolio: $141,896.75
- TFSA portfolio: $147,270.62
- RRSP portfolio (stocks only): $67,927.76
- US portfolio: $5,822.60 USD

Have you noticed that the value of my TFSA portfolio now exceeds my non-registered portfolio? My margin account debt is currently at $6,300. I won't be paying it down by the end of this month because I spent a lot of money before and during my vacation. Right now, I'm just $19 short for July, including my rent for August. I should be able to cover that $19 with dividend money, and if not, I'll deduct it from my margin. I'm sharing this to give you an idea of my current financial situation. I plan to spend significantly less in August and September. By the end of September, I aim to reduce my margin debt to $3,000. This way, I might be able to pay it off by the end of 2024 and start 2025 debt-free. Not a bad plan at all.

As far as I can recall, I've never been debt-free in my adult life. It would be a first for me. After becoming debt-free, I'd like to build up some savings because I simply don't have any right now. I don't recommend anyone adopt the same approach. For years, I've invested every penny I could. I didn't care about having debt or not having savings, though I did accumulate some savings from time to time, only to invest them shortly after... I started investing in stocks shortly before the 2008 stock market crash. For a long time after that, interest rates were low, so I took full advantage by linking a margin to my non-registered portfolio. Things are different now, and I wouldn't advise anyone to invest on margin due to the high interest rates. That's why I've been actively working to pay down my margin debt. It hasn't been easy, but at the same time, I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. I don't feel the same urge to invest my money these days as I did before.

Recently, it was announced that Park Lawn Corporation (PLC) intends to leave the TSX to become a private business. I'd welcome that, as it could provide a nice amount to help pay down my margin debt.

That's all for now.

Investment Gains vs. Summer Splurges: My Current Financial Landscape

It's a rainy evening in Montreal, so I thought it was a good time to post a little something on my blog—it's been a while. I've been doing quite well, taking long walks or going to the pool most days. So, let's begin!

The TSX closed today's session at 22,229.10 points. My margin debt is currently at $5,364.24. My non-registered portfolio closed today's session at $139,391.06, my US portfolio at $5,718.34 US, my RRSP stocks-only portfolio at $68,139.03, and my TFSA portfolio at $142,974.26. I don't think I will be able to pay down my margin debt much over the next couple of months, as summer is kicking in and I've been spending quite a bit lately. I spent a night at the Hilton Bonaventure Hotel earlier in May, recently got an AC for my studio apartment, and so on. This year, for my summer vacation, I reserved a 10-day accommodation by the sea. It cost me quite a bit, and ever since, I haven't been able to significantly pay down my margin debt due to all these expenses, big and small, that just keep accumulating.

It seems like I always have something going on that requires spending money. Currently, I really want to buy a decent pair of sandals, and I'm in need of a new bathing suit. I also want to buy a cordless vacuum, which I currently don't have. An example of recent spending: just today, I updated my credit card information for my renter's insurance. It cost me $355 for the year. My renewal date is tomorrow, and the money is being deducted in one single payment. It's not a huge amount, but still, it's a couple of hundred dollars. On top of that, I'm slowly running out of groceries and have no milk left. Life without milk is simply not possible for me, so guess who'll be grocery shopping tomorrow? :-)

So far, I've managed to pay my credit card in full every month, but for this month, I've calculated that I'll be short about $1,500. These days, I don't do much overtime and spend more than usual. It's a perfect combination for debt. I plan to borrow the money from my margin, which will momentarily bring my margin debt to around $7,000. I don't really mind because I know I will be able to pay it down starting in August. In the meantime, whenever I receive a dividend payment in my TFSA that is not set on a DRIP, I transfer the money to my margin to pay it down. Overall, my situation is good—I'm just spending more than usual. I'm aware of this and have been watching my expenses more closely for the past few days.

A very easy way to save a small fortune is to eat all your meals at home. Eating out can get quite expensive. You can easily spend $30 on a simple meal that just a few years ago might have cost half that amount. Luckily, in Montreal, you can always find places to get something cheap to eat, but it quickly adds up. Eating out is a bit problematic for me. I try to eat at home before going out and bring snacks with me. I have a huge appetite, so if I don't eat before going out and don't bring snacks, I know I'll be starving and probably stop by a restaurant if I don't eat at home.

Other than these little life problems, my portfolios have been performing quite well. Currently, in my non-registered portfolio, the only stock I have in the red is Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD). TD is facing some serious problems in the US. I will hold onto my TD stocks, but I wouldn't recommend buying any TD stocks at this time. I know I wouldn't.

I probably don't have to say this, and you may know this by now, but I hold many stocks in my portfolio. I am mostly emotionally attached to almost all of them. Recently, one of my precious stocks, Park Lawn Corporation (PLC), announced that the company is looking to leave the TSX. If stockholders approve, we'll get a good amount per share. Currently, I have a gain of +65% with my investment in Park Lawn Corporation (PLC). PLC is a stock that I found on Stockopedia. I haven't used that platform in a while because it was getting a bit expensive for me, but I plan to get back on Stockopedia in a couple of months. I really miss it. I had a fun time using Stockopedia because it gave me tools to find cool stocks that you don't hear about or that are not well-known. When I first invested in Park Lawn Corporation (PLC), I had never heard of it before. It's quite fun to invest in a stock that you feel is a good fit for you but is not well-known. It feels like you have a secret gem.

And speaking of gems, I might have found one while listening to BNN Bloomberg yesterday. Have you ever heard of Propel Holdings Inc. (PRL)? I might invest a small amount in this one.

My latest financial news

The TSX closed this past Friday session slightly below the 22,000-point mark, leaving my non-registered portfolio at $134,175.97, my US portfolio at $5,730.56 USD, my RRSP stocks-only portfolio at $63,924.75, and my TFSA portfolio at $138,752.39. These days, I have been more focused on paying down my margin account debt, which is currently sitting at $6,800. Otherwise, I don't actively follow what's going on in the stock market, but I do check the TSX multiple times a day during weekdays, as usual.

Time is passing by quite quickly; it's quite strange to suddenly realize that we are already at the end of April! Time goes by quickly when you work full-time, and if I ever finish my day at 6 p.m. or later on some days, that really doesn't leave me much time to enjoy my evenings. Lately, I have been trying to go for some evening walks whenever I have the chance. If I have checked correctly, the month of May is going to be a very special one. I am expecting three paycheques, which are more than welcome. I will do my very best to bring my margin debt down to $5,000. I have been in Montreal for a couple of weeks now and I loosen up a little when it comes to my expenses, but I try to keep them under control. Many things that I like to do in Montreal are free anyway. Let's just say that I don't deprive myself of absolutely anything these days, especially not espressos, but only one a day - sometimes two but not very often.

When I look at my non-registered portfolio, I only have two stocks that are in the red zone: BCE Inc. (BCE) and New Flyer Industries Inc. (NFI). My investment in BCE was done not too long ago. I was thinking about proceeding with a contribution in kind with those BCE shares to have them transferred over to my TFSA portfolio with the other BCE shares that I hold. That way, all of my BCE shares would be together. I believe I still have contribution room left in my TFSA to proceed; I will have to verify that. Currently, my BCE investment in my TFSA portfolio is down by 30%. Currently, BCE's dividend yield is ultra-appealing, at 8.95%. In my opinion, I hold enough shares of BCE in my portfolio, and I am not looking to add more, even if that yield is quite something.

Last week, I recently invested in a few shares for my RRSP portfolio using the money coming from dividend distribution. I invested in JFT Strategies Fund Class A Units (JFS.UN), Parkland Corporation (PKI), TMX Group Limited (X), and Topaz Energy Corp. (TPZ). PKI and TPZ are old picks from Jean-François Tardif. I always enjoy adding some new stocks to my portfolio, even if I already hold many of them, in multiple sectors and businesses. What do I have to lose, if not "just" money, by trying out a new stock with just one single investment? Personally, I find it to be quite fun. When it comes to X, it's a stock that I hold in my non-registered portfolio (+190.79%), TFSA portfolio (53%), and RRSP portfolio (+13.54%).

Back in October 2023, I invested a very small amount in a very special stock named Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (IVN). Currently, my investment in IVN is showing a beautiful gain of +91%! Trust me when I say, I only wish I had invested more in this one! I didn't know anything about Ivanhoe Mines until I heard Rick Rule talk about it on BNN Bloomberg's Market Call. I really enjoyed what he had to say. I usually don't invest in mining companies, but I certainly don't regret this investment. So thank you, Rick Rule. What a cool name, don't you think?

Also, in my RRSP portfolio, one stock that I feel is unknown and has performed well for me is Taiga Building Products Ltd. (TBL) (+24.81%). I am not especially a fan of gold, but I know it has its place in a portfolio. That's why I invested a little while ago in Sprott Physical Gold Trust (PHYS) (+16%).

In my TFSA portfolio, one stock that I didn't have any real hope for has performed quite well, and that's the Hamilton Enhanced U.S. Covered Call ETF (HYLD) (+14%).

Overall, I would say that I am doing alright.

My net worth is now at $407,032.02!

I updated my investment portfolio earlier this weekend just to find out - right on time for Easter - that my net worth is now at $407,032.02. Since the beginning of the year, my net worth has grown by over +$27,000. I reached the $400k milestone earlier in March, and ever since, it's been a bit difficult to realize that I finally reached the $400k net worth. I guess it's because I feel I had been waiting for this for way too long. Once it finally happened, it was a bit of a shock. It came as a surprise because I wasn't expecting it to arrive so early this year. I don't think hitting $500k will happen this year, but I think I may be able to reach $420k. Those kinds of things are always difficult to predict anyway, at least for me.

I arrived in Montreal from New Brunswick just last week. It's kind of nice to be enjoying the early months of spring here. The weather is much colder in New Brunswick, and we still have a lot of snow. I am enjoying myself a lot more here in Montreal. I haven't gone downtown yet or visited the Old Port. I cannot wait to go. I just want to do a bunch and go shopping :-)

Otherwise, I invested this past week in a few shares of BCE. I also just received some good dividends from Pembina Pipeline Corporation (PPL), which I reinvested (DRIP) to create more shares. With all of that good stuff, I am now earning an equivalent of $920 per month in dividend income from my non-registered and TFSA portfolios. I am getting very close to the $1k mark in income.

I recently made an interesting discovery. From time to time, I like to check on the composition of JFT Strategies Fund Class A Units (JFS.UN). I hold some JFS.UN units in my RRSP portfolio. To my surprise, JFS.UN holds some Data Communications Management Corp stocks!

I have a disastrous history when it comes to Data Communications Management (DCM). Even though it's part of the JFT Strategies Fund Class A Units (JFS.UN), I do not recommend holding onto any of those DCM stocks. I don't understand why that stock is in JFS.UN in the first place. It doesn't make any sense to me. It's the same situation with Colabor Group Inc. I used to hold some Colabor stocks a long time ago, and it didn't turn out to be a good investment. I am very surprised that a fund as stable as JFT Strategies Fund Class A Units (JFS.UN) holds onto such poor investments. I feel like Mattr Corp. (MATR) is also a poor investment. I don't know much about those stocks, but I don't understand why they're in JFT Strategies Fund Class A Units (JFS.UN).

I don't know about you, but I've already booked my vacation for this summer. I'll be spending 10 days at the beach. I've already paid for the accommodation; it's something like $2,000 after taxes! It's outrageously expensive. Between now and the summer, I will try to control my expenses, but at the same time, there are many things I am looking forward to doing. We'll see how it goes.
