Closing out this Black Friday with a net worth of $443,118.38

The TSX closed this past Friday’s session at a disastrous 23,193.47 points, down -1,142.30 (-4.69%). It’s quite rare to have two exceptionally bad days in a row. Usually, when the market experiences a deep correction, it bounces back at least slightly the following day—but that’s certainly not what happened this time! As of now, U.S. futures are significantly down, which could lead to yet another painful day tomorrow morning for the TSX.

These past couple of days weren’t easy to watch, but strangely enough, I remained surprisingly calm. Derek Foster recently sent out a newsletter where he shared which stocks he's currently investing in, among other insights. I replied, thanking him for the note—because in these chaotic times, we all need some good, old-fashioned common sense. I told him that thanks to his influence, I was very close to reaching a $500,000 net worth before this correction hit and that I was proud of how calmly I was handling the market crash. I also mentioned that I recently ordered his new book God and Santa—even if it’s not finance-related, I was just glad he published something new.

Right now, Derek Foster is investing in names like CNR but is also keeping some cash on hand—which makes sense, considering he has a big family to care for (eight kids!). Regardless, I think it’s smart to keep some cash in any investment portfolio. For many years, I lived paycheque to paycheque, investing every single penny that I could. It’s not something I recommend doing, but it’s what I did for most of my adult life. I’ve never been afraid of losing money. You might see that as a good or bad thing, but I don’t fear the stock market—I see it as a tool. These days, I have $10K in savings and I’m working toward increasing that to at least $20K in the coming months, and maybe even more.

After my exchange with Derek, I realized the main reason I was feeling so calm: I have no more margin debt. In the past, even small market corrections made me a bit nervous because of the margin exposure. I was lucky—I never got a margin call—but only because I carefully managed the available balance. Now, with no margin debt at all, I can track the TSX without feeling on edge. And it's quite a liberating feeling.

Between April 2 and April 4, my net worth dropped by -$23,115.50. That’s obviously a huge loss, but I was mentally prepared for it. Maybe that’s another reason why I’ve remained composed. With Trump eyeing a second term, I expected market volatility—but I didn’t expect things to get this bad so fast.

I started investing right before the 2008 crash and used that moment as an opportunity. It was clear to me that investing during a downturn was the right move. I never doubted it. I was actually a poor girl with the mindset of a rich boss. Everyone builds their own view of the markets over time, but one truth I’ve come to believe in is this: the stock market always wins in the long run. A correction doesn’t change the fundamentals of the stocks you own. If my “bitch” (aka my portfolio) is going down, I’m holding her hand tight and going down with her. Hopefully, this correction will turn into an opportunity for growth—that's my wish. This is my personal opinion, and keep in mind that I could be wrong. At this critical point, you are the master of your finances, and you should do what feels right for you.

Until recently, my net worth hit a high of $466K. My all-time high was $469K back in January 2025. It’s never fun to watch your net worth decline, but there’s nothing you can do about it. This is not the time to sell. It’s so important to hold onto your investments because if you sell, you’ll miss the recovery when it eventually comes. Right now, it’s hard to even imagine a rebound—but like I said: the market always recovers. Just give it time. It won’t happen overnight. Recoveries tend to be slower. My best advice? Hold. Breathe. Take care of yourself. Stay calm. Invest if you can.

A correction like this can be mentally exhausting—and that’s totally normal. So, take a rest when you need it. And if you’re in a position to invest without using margin, go for it. This could be your moment.

We might be looking at a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy quality assets at fair (corrected) prices. I built much of my portfolio during the 2008 crash. I knew I was doing the right thing back then—and I believe the same applies now. Think of this crash as your chance to buy all the stocks you’ve ever dreamed of—at a discount!

That’s exactly the mindset I had when I gave myself an “investment party.” Did you notice any newcomers in my portfolio? Here’s my latest portfolio update:

Over the past couple of months, I’ve worked hard to build up some cash. As a treat, I invested most of my Friday paycheque. Since National Bank charges no commission, I really went for it. I no longer disclose share quantities, but most of the time I only invest in one or two shares at a time. In times like these, that’s a smart move. It leaves room for future opportunities if stock prices dip further.

Here are the Canadian stocks I bought this past Friday:

SGR.UN, ALC, BEP.UN, PBH, GRT.UN, TD, CM, BNS, AD.UN, FTS, CUP.U, POU, CRT.UN, SRU.UN, RUS, ENQ, EIF, OTEX, CTC.A, WCP, NRGI, X, BAM

A Date to Remember: April 3, 2025 – A Black Thursday for Canadian Investors

My stock portfolio closed the day with a loss of -$6,547.34 (-1.715%). This was expected. It didn’t come as a surprise because I had been keeping an eye on U.S. futures since yesterday’s market close. It’s not that complicated — our beautiful TSX is very much linked to the U.S. market, and we never remain completely independent. But I believe that’s true of all markets worldwide, just at different levels.

My non-registered portfolio closed this Black Thursday session at $153,750.62, my U.S. portfolio at $6,490.75, my RRSP at $86,884.97, and my TFSA at $125,352.42.

I was quite upset this morning because the worst happened: National Bank Direct Brokerage (NBDB) wasn’t allowing users to buy — and probably not even sell — some stocks! I kept trying, and it finally went through, but it was incredibly frustrating, especially at a time when all I wanted to do was buy valuable stocks during the dip.

I tried to take advantage of the downturn by buying a few stocks. The list might look long and impressive, but in most cases, I only invested in a few shares — sometimes even just one! Here's what I bought today:

  • Capital Power Corporation (CPX)

  • Finning International Inc. (FTT)

  • Hamilton Enhanced U.S. Covered Call ETF (HYLD)

  • Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNQ)

  • MEG Energy Corp. (MEG)

  • Ninepoint Energy Income Fund ETF (NRGI)

  • Valeura Energy Inc. (VLE)

  • Slate Grocery REIT (SGR.UN)

  • Algoma Central Corporation (ALC)

  • Fortis Inc. (FTS)

  • CT Real Estate Investment Trust (CRT.UN)

  • Chemtrade Logistics Income Fund (CHE.UN)

  • Brookfield Asset Management Inc. Class A (BAM.A)

  • Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS)

From this list, there are three stocks I had never written about or invested in before today:

  • MEG Energy Corp. (MEG)

  • Valeura Energy Inc. (VLE)

  • Slate Grocery REIT (SGR.UN)

This morning, Eric Nuttall was on BNN Bloomberg and mentioned CNQ and MEG as potential good buys — so I followed his lead.

As for VLE and SGR.UN, I found them through Stockopedia (https://app.stockopedia.com/). VLE doesn’t pay a dividend, but I wanted in anyway. SGR.UN, on the other hand, looks like a fantastic find — it’s a solid dividend payer! Today, I was targeting stocks that were going down but still offer reliable dividend yields.

With today’s buys, my monthly dividend income (excluding RRSP) is now at about $928, which I find quite satisfying.

Believe it or not, I still have several thousand dollars left in my RRSP. I plan to invest that gradually. Today was a big day — and there could be more to come. Still, I preferred not to invest everything all at once. I didn’t touch my savings either. Now more than ever, I feel it’s important to have some money put aside. Cash is an important asset. If you lose your job, yes, you’ll receive unemployment insurance, but what if there's a delay in processing due to high demand? On top of that, everything might get more expensive in the coming weeks because of tariffs. It’s hard to tell where inflation is heading, but I’m staying calm.

In my opinion, the best way to get through this is to stay grounded. Invest if you can — and if you can’t, that’s totally fine. If you do invest, even picking up just a few shares is okay. We might be in for a down spiral, so it’s wise to invest little by little.

I’m extremely proud of finding Slate Grocery REIT (SGR.UN) on Stockopedia. It’s not a stock I’d put thousands into, but it’s a great little dividend gem — with a juicy yield of 8.769%! Since it pays in USD, this one is best held in a registered account like a TFSA or RRSP to avoid the withholding tax.

Have you ever heard of a grocery REIT before today? I know I hadn’t! That’s why I’m so thrilled with this pick — it combines the security of the grocery business with the stability of a REIT. GENIUS! I don’t know if other grocery REITs exist, but I’m definitely interested in finding out.

I’ll admit, when the TSX is down like it was today, I’m tempted to invest using margin or dip into my savings. But I always pause and remind myself of a few things:

  • Maybe we haven’t hit the bottom yet — that’s the obsessive question that never goes away.

  • This correction is different. Trump is... well, Trump.

  • Canada is highly dependent on the U.S. economy.

  • I could lose my job — no matter how long I’ve been employed.

That’s why I didn’t touch my savings or margin. Impressive self-control. Interest rates are still high, after all.

I’m no longer on X/Twitter, but you can now follow me on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/sunnyjnb.bsky.social

Welcoming the month of April in Montreal!

It’s now my second week in Montreal. Basically, I went from this—somewhere in New Brunswick—to this:

To this, Montreal:

In Montreal, The Bay is my favorite store, followed by Simons and Uniqlo. The Bay is located right downtown in an iconic building. I was quite sad to learn about The Bay’s financial distress. I had a gift card, so I went and spent it. I bought a nice top and a pair of sandals. The sandals weren’t on a super bargain sale, but I didn’t want to lose the money on my gift card.

Recently, I also bought a really nice black Calvin Klein trench coat and another Ralph Lauren trench in a great khaki green at Winners. I adore Ralph Lauren—it’s definitely my favorite designer. I own a few Ralph Lauren pieces: a blazer, a few t-shirts (which I call shoulder t-shirts), a pair of jeans, a summer dress, and now a spring jacket. I had a great spring coat from The Bay that I bought many years ago, but the interior started deteriorating, so I treated myself to a new one. Winners is a great place to shop for clothes, though I’ve never been lucky enough to find a good pair of shoes there. I know Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein are U.S. brands, but at some point, a girl needs to put clothes on her back.

It always takes me a little time to adjust when coming back to Montreal, especially after spending the months from mid-October to mid-March in New Brunswick. This year, my father celebrated his 75th birthday (I’ll be turning 45 in August!). I wanted to stay at least until his birthday, and then my mom’s birthday followed shortly after, so I waited until after both their birthdays to return to Montreal. Coming back always comes with a bit of stress from leaving my old folks behind, but at the same time, I’m quite happy to be in my little apartment, enjoying my own space.

I'm trying to build a new routine. Yesterday was the first time I went to the gym in a long time. When I’m in New Brunswick, especially during the winter, I can’t go to the gym as much as I’d like. I also can’t go out or shop as often as I want. So being in Montreal comes with a lot of perks. One thing that affects my health when I’m in New Brunswick is that I basically live at the same pace as my old folks, and I don’t get to exercise as much as I should. And I cannot simply do whatever I want while spending the winter with them.

Last night marked my first day back at the gym. I managed to burn 600 calories in 57 minutes on the elliptical. I kept my eyes on the timer the whole time—goal achieved, 600 calories in 60 minutes. I’m not totally out of shape, but I definitely need to get more active. Let see if I can make it to 600 calories withing 55 minutes this evening. I usually prefer going to the gym in the evening. I am not a morning person—at all.

Now that I’m back in Montreal, I recently ordered a copy of Derek Foster’s new book, God and Santa. It’s obviously not one of his usual financial books, but I wanted to read it. You can learn more about it here: https://godandsanta.com/about-the-book/

Since returning to Montreal, I’ve already spent quite a bit of money, but it was expected. I went straight to the hairdresser as soon as I arrived—I badly needed a haircut. Of course, I also went shopping. I went to the movies and saw The Monkey by Stephen King. I highly recommend it. It’s a horror movie, but it’s funny—you’ll laugh out of disgust, if that makes any sense!

As for savings, I closed March with exactly $10,382.06. I submitted my tax return early and hope to get $5,000 back, though that might be a bit optimistic. I should be able to reach $15,000 in savings by June, or even more, depending on my tax refund.

The stock market remains volatile, and I think it will unfortunately stay that way for a while—possibly the next four years… But today was a good day. The TSX closed at a satisfying 25,033.28 points (+0.46%). Anything above 25,000 points is reassuring, considering the mess that is the U.S. government. Thanks to the idiots’ club, I estimate my current net worth to be around $464,000. My highest net worth ever was back in January of this year, at $469,813.55. Right now, I have everything I need to reach the $500K mark with ease. My portfolio isn’t just a portfolio—it’s a work of art, absolute perfection. But thanks to the U.S., I have no idea when I’ll be able to make my dream come true, and that’s frustrating. Nearing $500K, my net worth is finally starting to look like something interesting.

Here’s how my numbers looked at today’s market close:
Non-registered portfolio: $155,270.14
U.S. portfolio: $6,485.04 USD
RRSP portfolio (stocks-only): $87,226.57
TFSA: $126,350.25

My numbers remain solid, but investing in stocks isn’t an easy task these days. I still have over $13K in cash sitting in my RRSP portfolio, quietly waiting to be invested. And that’s okay—I’ll have cash ready when the TSX drops again.

Earlier, I received an email saying that I was featured in the 10 Best Canadian Dividend Blogs and Websites of 2025 on FeedSpot: https://bloggers.feedspot.com/canadian_dividend_blogs/

How cute is that?

I don’t know about you, but lately, I’ve been stuck on this song—I love it so much! Good job, North West! The other songs on FKA Twigs’ album are quite different and don’t have the same pop/dance vibe. But this one? That’s my song of the moment! I must admit that I didn't know FKA Twigs before hearing this cool song.
